Technology Center 1600 is the home for life science patent applications at the USPTO. This includes applications related to organic compounds, organic chemistry, molecular biology, immunology, fermentation, and plants.

TC 1600 is the most difficult technology center at the USPTO, with an allowance rate of only 61% — well below the USPTO average of 75%. Life science patents, particularly those covering biological materials, are some of the most complex and frequently subject to § 101 rejections. TC 1600 has received the highest number of Myriad/Mayo rejections of all technology centers. The average allowance rate for those applications is the second-lowest, sitting at 50%.
