Juristat is proud to release its 2017 ranking of the Top 100 Patent Firms. This is the only ranking of U.S. patent prosecution firms based on objective measurements of firm performance. Before we get to the numbers, let's take a closer look at our eligibility criteria.

Eligibility & Methodology

You can read about our methodology below or check out this short video to see how we compiled this year's rankings:

The Juristat ranking of the best patent firms is unique in that it considers both volume and performance. Our ranking is based on four key metrics, as measured from July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2015. These metrics are:

  • Number of Applications Filed
  • Allowance Rate
  • Average Number of Office Actions Before Allowance
  • Average Time to Allowance

All metrics herein, apart from Applications Filed, are based on public applications disposed between July 1, 2014 and June 30, 2015. Applications Filed, as you might have guessed, is based on published applications filed during that time. Finally, to qualify for inclusion, a firm must have filed a minimum of 200 applications during that time.

For the purposes of this list, we attributed applications to the firm or assignee listed on the application at the time of compilation. Therefore, if a firm assigns applications back to a client after grant, those applications will not be attributed to that firm.

After the firms’ rankings were calculated for each of the criterion above, we calculated an overall ranking by determining a weighted average of each firm’s four rankings. This method is but one way to measure a firm’s performance and is not intended to be definitive. There are many different areas in which a firm may excel, which this particular list may not encompass.

It's also important to note that we excluded foreign priority applications and design applications from our calculations. This can significantly affect the filing totals shown below. We plan to publish another list later this year that includes foreign priority. To see that list before anyone else, please subscribe to our exclusive email content. We'll also give you the first look at the Juristat Top 100 Assignees (coming this June).
