Technology Center Deep Dive: A Look at TC 1700

USPTO TC 1700

Technology Center 1700 handles chemical and materials engineering, including batteries and fuel cells, metallurgy, adhesives, biochemistry, inorganic chemistry, glass and paper making, and food.

It is one of the most difficult technology centers at the USPTO, although its allowance rate has been increasing steadily since its all-time low in 2008. The average allowance rate of 67% is far below the USPTO average of 76%, and even lower than the notoriously Alice-heavy TC 3600 (70%). The only technology center with a lower allowance rate is TC 1600, at 61%. Applicants in TC 1700 face an uphill climb in obtaining patent protection for their inventions.
