And we’re not about to slow down. Next year will bring new products and updates to help you improve your patent practice.
We’re excited for 2023, but first, let’s look back at the topics that most interested you in the past year. Here are the top blog posts of 2022:
At the start of each year, we publish our annual rankings of the best firms in each technology center at the USPTO. Analyzing each firm’s allowance rate, number of office actions before allowance, and count of applications filed, these rankings take both performance and volume of work into consideration. This post takes a deep dive into some of the trends that emerged from the 2021 rankings, including which firms were repeat winners.
Also widely read under the Top Firms banner were deep dives into the top firms for design patents, as well as the top patent firms for applications claiming foreign priority.
When it comes to office actions and your patent prosecution strategy, less is definitely more. Less time, less work, more profit, and more satisfied clients. Based on our 2022 ranking, though, some USPTO examiners might be thinking more is more. We studied data from more than 7,400 examiners to determine the 10 examiners who, on average, issue the most OAs per application.
Juristat continues to track what the USPTO calls “end-loading,” or an examiner’s tendency to complete a higher volume of work at the end of the quarter. Here, we list the 10 worst procrastinators at the USPTO (indicated by their high end-loading rate) and the 10 examiners who end-load the least.
Procrastinating examiners can have a significant impact on your workload, and they can also impact your likelihood of earning an allowance. This analysis also includes a list of examiners who, based on their end-loading OA success rate change, get easier or more difficult at the end of the quarter.
After releasing our Top Firms list, we reached out to a few representatives to share some insight into their firm’s success and current industry challenges. Their advice touched on client trust and communication, company culture, remote work, talent retention, efficient operations, and adopting innovative technologies.
There are two types of patent petitions: petitions that are so routine you can do them in your sleep and those so rare you don’t even know where to start. (This is when Petition Searching can come in handy!) Looking at the last five years of petition documents, we discovered the most routine and the rarest petitions filed at the USPTO.
The legal industry was not immune to the effects of the “Great Resignation.” According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than 700,000 people in the professional and business services category — including lawyers and other legal professionals — quit their jobs between August 2021 and December 2021.
The most effective way to ease pressure on your team of patent professionals and make the most of limited staff is to invest in workflow automation. Here we look at two fundamental truths about workflow automation that can help your office thrive during the Great Resignation and share tips on ensuring success.
This fall marked the tenth anniversary of post-grant proceedings at the PTAB, and some interesting trends emerged regarding which technologies, firms, and expert witnesses have been most active when it comes to IPR, PGR, and CBM.
Using the same database that powers Juristat PTAB Expert Search, we analyzed nearly 6,000 trials filed between 2017-2021 to list not only the top petitioners and owners but also the emerging companies facing more litigation now than ever. This analysis offers valuable competitive intelligence insight and, for IP firms, uncovers opportunities to grow your litigation practice.
In our experience, workflow automation can improve a firm’s IDS practice. We’ve seen automation increase efficiency, reduce errors, and prevent staff burnout for our clients. While every firm is unique, here are a few questions about Juristat IDS automation that come up time and again, including how we track subject matter relationships, average turnaround times, how we manage foreign art and more.
